"Glasgow Head"

My paddle today took me from Canso Tickle around Glasgow Head to the community of Dover. About a 3 hour leisurely paddle.I've always wanted to do this when I came home but either never had the time, the weather or my boats. Today was as good as a day could get. Sunny, hot and light winds. What a day it turned out to be and what a blast I had exploring some of the many small islands and rocky inlets along the way. If you every want an enjoyable safe paddle, this would be it. I was only saddened that I had to stop at Dover and not continue on.

"The Huts"

We call them "huts" in Canso and Dover. They are essentially small cabins where on nice days people retreat for privacy and picnicking. They are strategically placed for ease of access, shelter from winds and waves, and placed in areas with views that would melt your heart. These huts are also used as temporary residences in some cases during fishing seasons mostly Lobster. These rocky areas also provide premium lobster grounds for catches of lobster that have been phenomenal over the past few years. This is Greg's and Andrea's, my nephew and partner. It was just built and still needs to have the dock added. Greg is always boating in these waters and the boys from town meet down here often enough for times of fun and relaxation and of course just "mulling around in boats".

"A Featureless Coastline"

The paddle from Canso to Dover is very much featureless for the most part. You have the beauty of many rock islands barely treed and the smells of spruce and pine mixed with salt brine as you paddle by. On a sunny and hot day to me it was spectacular. The birds I noticed flew so close to me either very curious or trying to ward me off. The rocks though are smoothed from the strong gales that often blow along these shores.

"Rock Hopping"

Rock hoping in this area near near Madelaine Point is so neat because there are rock islands and little inlets everywhere and hidden rocks beneath the surface. A place where only a kayak would feel at home and I sure did.

"Rounding Little Dover Island"

Also known as White's Island, Little Dover Island is the bigger Island as you enter Dover Harbour. There are many rocks and shoals. The Lumsden shoal is one near the entrance to the bay. I could see these waters being nasty to paddle in a strong easterly or south easterly wind as the shallow waters would make for some interesting lop. Actually it might be quite fun.

"Tons of These"

As you paddle from Canso to Dover you are surrounded, if you want to be, by garnite Isands with a meager existance of sparce tree growth finding a subsistance there. They are fun to paddle around and would provide shelter on a gnarly day I suppose and lots of places to stop for a break. The winds were very mild on this day.

"Seaweed Carpet"

Lots of seaweed as you paddle through Dover Islands. Acts as a bit of a protectant when landing or maneuvering around rocks.

"Bear Island"

Paddling in around dthe Islands of Dover it was difficult for me to actually identify a lot of the smaller islands as there are so many and unnamed on the chart. This may be Bear Island or at least very near it.

"Flag Marks The Spot"

Paddling in Dover Guysborough County, I came across this red flag. I wasn't sure of it's significance until I paddled up to it and realized there is a huge rock just below the surface. Not a problem for me but I could just imagine a boater sailing along and snagging it quite easily. Because it is tucked in amongst a bunch of small islands it would not need to be marked by a gov't vessel. Someone had the sense to take it upon themelves to mark it for others though. Neat.

"Unsettled Landing", Little Dover, Guysborough, NS

The sun just poked out for a sec as I snapped this wave having its' crest ripped off by an offshore wind.

I love waves they remind me of snow flakes as no two are the same and they unlike snow flakes are packed with tons of energy. I watch them alot and have lots of pictures of waves doing just about everything. I have great respect for them. The only way to save them is to take a picture.
