"I Am A Rock, I Am An Island"

In Trinity Bay near Chance Cove and Big Chance Cove. Luckily this ragged rock is visible at high tide sure wouldn't want to be scraping the bottom on this thing, although on this particular paddle there were lots of boats that got their hulls scraped from the raggedness of the geology submerged just below the water. Hard to avoid when playing in rocks at high or low tides in this area. Lots of rock in NL.

"Lobster Buoy"

Years ago in Atlantic Canada Lobsters were considered bottom scavengers and weren't looked upon as a preferred food from the ocean. Cod, Halibut and haddock were of more consequence and taste in most peoples minds. Lobster did become a delicacy as lean years made their value increase and lobster licenses became very value able and sought after. Years of vicious storms and the environment had its deleterious affects as well, which helped make lobster more of a commodity.

Today lobster is plentiful it is like it is at some kind of peak in some kind of cycle. Most fisherman know that these days of plenty are usually cyclical in the fishing industry. In PEI some fisherman are just not going out due to the amounts being caught and the low price being paid. The cost of manpower, fuel and such is not making it worth it, now I never heard of that before. Times they are a changing. Maybe we are in the precursor days of recession but whatever the reason for lobster a plenty my sister in Cape Breton ,NS will always be eating them. She loves them. I like them but could just as easily enjoy very crispy chicken wings with Blue Cheese dip, but I certainly won't refuse the ones my brother will probably have waiting for us when we visit in the first week of July. I will be on the water for Canada Day but in a much bigger boat than I paddle, the NL ferry to North Sydney, NS. Homeward bound.

So this buoy on a recent paddle is a reminder of a lot of things but mostly that in or on the water life is changing as much or as little as it certainly is on land.

"The Gang"

Thanks guys for an excellent paddle from Bellevue Beach To almost Rantem Harbour more like Chance Cove as it turns out. A wicked sunny clear day and there definitely was no other place that one would rather be than on the waters of Newfoundland today.

Michelle & Isabell"

 And then there was two!

"Paddle Attack"

Looks like these two, Brian and Paul, are attacking each other with paddles. Not the case however. Admiring each others boat no doubt?

"Shore Solitude"

Peter is enjoying the solitude of paddling near shore but there is also an advantage to this as the shore waves can push you along making for some sweet paddling.

"Sea Stack"

Well it is what it is and paddling near this primordial geology today made for some very captivating scenes and having paddlers along to enjoy made it much more of a treat. The sun was shining all day and the winds wre favorable....maybe there is a kayaking God afterall.

"Clear Sky, Clear Water"

Clearly a wicked day to be on the water. Meandering our way to Chance Cove.

"Blue On Blue"

The blue sky and the blue water today made this paddle very enjoyable for all the beautiful colors that were imparted to the environment all around. The color of the waters were quite magical.

"And There we Were!"

Just stay where you're to, til I come where you're at. Not easy today as this group was eager to paddle and play in the low tide shoals.

"Working It"

"Rock Salad"

Looks good enough to eat to me!!

"Slicing Thru"

Carolyn is slicing thru the rocks here, well actually she is navigating a narrow passage. There was lots of opportunity for rock hopping and practising quick turning and edging skills today.

"Captivating"

Laura may or may not have been captivated by the geology and beauty of these cliffs and little caves but it is easy to tell she is enjoying the paddle as everyone did on this outing today.

"Emerald Waters"

Brian and Leslie in the distance were just edging their way along the beautiful waters of this little cove. The weather was perfect for a Saturday outing to Rantem Harbour.

"Execution"

Well not what ya might be thinking right off but "execution" is everything in a roll. Derek had no qualms about submerging himself in the less than cozy waters of NL.

"The Teeth!!"

For a little fishy this Sculpun or whatever skeleton it is has very good size teeth. Better on a stick than a leg. Dave found it on one of our stops.

"Clear Cool Water"

Cool may be an understatement because the water is pretty cold, about 3 degrees if that. In this little cave across from Chance Cove Beach the water is crystal clear and the turquoise colors were amazing. This was a very colorful paddle today.

"Tony With Geology"

With the colorful geology in the background Tony was explaining to me how some of this earth was formed and colored. Volcanoes and such were probably responsible for some of this formation. It makes for a most interesting paddle when you just comfortably cruise buy at your own pace on a beautiful day. Near Chance Cove.
