"Going Green, Bay Bulls NFLD"

The greens today were astounding. The water, the grass on rock, yes on rock, The kelp under water and seaweed of course made for a spectacular paddle. What an adventurous part of the Avalon Peninsula. Which is why Outfitters also offer kayak tours out of here.

"The Dungeon"

 

One of the must see attractions to Bonavista is The Dungeon Provincial Park and "The Dungeon" circular sea cave accessible by land and by water. Of course I had to check it out and it added a bit of excitement for the rest of the early morning paddle on Saturday the 16th, sunny day of May.

"Embedded Gold"

 

"There be gold in them thar walls,"....I felt like saying. Fool's gold that is. Any other kind of gold and I am sure that the cave would be a cave no more. Could have benefitted from Tony being along and his geology skills.

"Turquoise Cave Waters"

 

Once insdie the cave wates turned a nice shade of turquoise, I think.

"Entrances/Exits"

Looking to inside both entrances/exits one can see the fallen roof of the once covered natural cave. Once the roof collapsed years ago it was left open and visible for all to see from the water and from the land as in the picture I took in the header of my blog. The sea caves are about 300 meters across and about 15 meters deep. People actually swim there when the water is a bit warmer. They can climb down from above, which is tricky in itself but there is definitely a worn trail down or enter as I did in a small craft because at low tide the rocky bottom is very visible. Others look for the fool's gold that is embedded in the walls of the sea cave and might even be able to get pieces as a souvenir. Hard to stay still though with the wind and the small current. The wind when I first entered was strong enough blowing through the outside to push me against the shore. It just literally gusted through and blew the boat across the water's surface. Another scar story for my new boat.

"Exit The Dungeon"

 

Exiting The Dungeon Sea Cave was as intriguing as entering. It certainly was not difficult getting in and out of "The Dungeon" save for the winds blowing through which were still brisk outside from yesterday and funnelling through. The fact that they were SW was of benefit. If they had of been NE or easterly that spot may be tricky to get in and out of with any kind of outside sea. Not so much the cave entrances themselves but the wind that gets channeled inside, coupled with water gushing in and out might be interesting! The shoreline and ocean topography is very shallow to paddle in. Northerlies or Easterlies or a combination of both of any strength, could be treacherous paddling in the rocky outcroppings, shoals, reefs and sea stacks. Beautiful during the conditions that I had and captivating as the sun rose on the distant horizon.

"Captivating Caves"

Just to heighten the adventure on this paddling day you can treat yourself along this route to numerous sea cave exploration. Providing the tide and sea state is favorable you can gain entry....and exit to these interesting vacuoles. Some were quite long like paddling down a water tunnel....a dark cool water tunnel.

"Clear Cool Water"

 Cool may be an understatement because the water is pretty cold, about 3 degrees if that. In this little cave across from Chance Cove Beach the water is crystal clear and the turquoise colors were amazing. This was a very colorful paddle today.

"Can't Be?"

Well it isn't really. This is a cave in Cape Broyle but these are not all the colors that were originally recorded. When I was going thru some photos this evening I decided to play with the saturation on some of them and I thought this one was kind of mystical and worth posting. Most of the colors are in fact intact but the blues are added as well is some pink in the saturation process. It would be kind of interesting no doubt if one did encounter such a cave but I would be very curious what may be inside.

"Purple Walled"

Walls of purple add to the colors as you paddle deep into the environs of a sea cave under the rocky cliffs on an outing in NL. It is not hard to encounter these eye catching rendezvous on any outing along the Avalon Penninsula.

"Striated Color"

The ocean colors abound on many paddles around the rocks and cliffs in NL, as well as cave entrances. As seen here.

"Inner Sanctum"

If colors run rampant in a sea cave such as this, in a cave in NL, and no one is there to see it ....... is it still beauty?

"Cave Kaleidoscope"

The colors inside sea caves can be astounding such as this one in Cape Broyle.

"A Cave Tempt"

We really wanted to go thru here but the sewlls were much too high and you could see the sea crashing thru the cave on the other side of this portal.

"Water Dungeon"

I felt like I was in a water dungeon and I don't even know what they feel like!

"Cave Exit"

This is the exit to the cave that I explored in the previous picture at Cape Broyle, NL. July 18th, 2007. Just amazing!
