This is a Salmon Ladder on The Cataract River.

On our way to Colinet this weekend we stopped at this area to visit a salmon ladder they have built on The Cataract River I couldn't see what all the fuss was :) but had to stop and take a look. Was glad I did because the sun was creating some really warm shadows as it was declining in the west and allowed me to get some neat HDR shots. Now we went looking also for the Cataract Provincial Park and couldn't find it well not that easily anyway. It sort of became fitting how the park got it's name. You have to shed the cataracts to seee it.

Home was a four season tent but we felt like we were in paradise and really, ain't that all that matters? We bought a blow up mattress before we left the city. It plugs into the lighter and blows up in less than 2 mins, now that was the Cat's Meow. Actually that was the name of her sleeping bag I bought her to entice her to come. What a comfy sleep we had on what turned out to be a SINGLE mattress. Ya just can't have it all eh? heh heh! This was Friday night and we were relaxing after setting up camp in near dark cause we were sight- seeing(mostly looking for a spot to camp) and just finished eating stuffed salmon and a greek pasta salad. Hmmmmhmmmm

Saturday Morning and it was time to break camp and get on the water.

"North Harbour"

 

We put in on Saturday morning at North Harbour on our longweekend excursion. North HArbour is west of Colinet HArbour and Carla wanted to paddle under the old Tresle crossing the entrance/exit of North Harbour River. Seems like a contradiction of words but it was well worth the decision to do put in here on this beautiful sunny day..our first paddle together....ahhhhhh :).

We walked the boat up a bit of the North Harbour River and got some river action on the way back.

This was only Carla's second time in a kayak and both were in a double and she did just excellent paddling on our weekend trip. I think a double may be in our future. It was great fun sharing the kayaking experience together and something we had, surprisingly enough, never done before. It takes patience....I have to work on that, coordination....she has to work on that and cooperation .....we both did that well. I admired her resilience when we were heading back in fairly strong head winds in what felt to me like a wide tub after paddling my Nordkapp. The Current Designs Crosswind is a nice boat but I would much prefer the Seaward fiberglass Passats, as these are delight doubles to paddle. Carla kept banging her thumb knuckle on the edge. Now I know this is partially due to paddling stance that she may not possess yet but the boat is wide and you have to either hold your arms up in a high paddling position or widen your grip or most likely both. I widened my grip. Still fun though.

"Saturated Gannet Babies"

Carla and I headed over to Cape St. Mary's Ecological Gannet Sanctuary while we were in Colinet Newfoundland on May long weekend. My shots wouldn't really do St. Mary's justice but this one was fun because without over-saturating the image the babies were hard to see and blended in with their natural background, the wonders of nature and survival. I can't imagine who might prey on them on these cliffs though, maybe a rogue Gull or another wacky Gannet.

The adults are white with yellowish heads and the babies are the ones with the mottled saturated blue appearance. Kind of cool I thought.

"Gull Cannibal"

 
This Gull brought new meaning to the term scavenger. As we were paddling the shore line Wayne noticed lots of feathers in the water. I thought it was nothing. It may have been a gull scrap and if so, this was ones' fate. The gull floating nearby was digging at the not so lucky gull's chest as we paddled near and he wasn't willing to fly away none too soon either.

While swimming in Fox Island the Atlantic this time home wasn't so cold and when you ducked under water, we use to call it "getting your ducking", you could see these little minnows.


At first I was alarmed when Wayne yelled that there was a black cloud moving in to shore and that it was moving around quickly. Well, exposed up to my waist I wasn't too happy about any black cloud moving uder water that I couldn't see. So I ducked under again and saw the huge school of fish swimming around our legs. Very cool!
