"Paddling The Peninsula of Port de Grave"

I put the two maps here of the trip because the topo has the names of the areas on the Peninsula. It was a most awesome journey, as all are.

"Port de Grave"

Port de Grave (harbour of the beaches), NFLD Feb. 1st, 2008. For a concise history and perspective on Port de Grave Peninsula check out this link. http://portdegrave.com/hibbs_cove.htm

"Bareneed, NL"

This is my put-in site at 0730h on Feb.1st, 2008 for an approx. 4 hr paddle up the Port de Grave Peninsula. Should have been 3 but there were strong head winds coming back. The day started out very sunny and remained that way for the whole of the trip. The winds varied the whole way but definitely picked up upon my return.

"Freezing Cold"

Passing by more clif ice.

"Fox's Rocks"

These rocks/cliffs are just up the Peninsula from Blow Me Down and had an interesting grain to them. Some places in NFLD I swear, it looks like the glaciers just left!

"Blow Me Down"

Blow Me Down was calm but it was here that the winds started to pick up for the end of the trip to Bareneed.

Hibb's Ice"

Ice forming from spring run-off at Hibb's Hole". Feb. 1st, 2008.

"Green Point Light"

When I got to this point I thought I would round it and continue on down Bay Roberts but the wind was just howling so I decided to head back to Bay De Grave/Conception Bay.

"Port de Grave, Harbour"

A bit of slushy ice, easy to paddle thru though, at the mouth of the Harbour, but the boats were frozen in.

"Pick Eyes"

Seeing the effects of the 40 plus km/hr winds heading back from Green's Point and this is just off Pick Eyes. A bit of a task freeing my hands to snap this.

"Eclipse"

My old faithful. I love 'er. At Bareneed, NL.

"Trip Complete"

I had a problem with the camera lens fogging up the whole day. It was about -12 with the windchill I guess and I had to constantly wipe the lens with my wet neoprene gloves but it worked.........sometimes.
Traveled 17 km today. This is the takeout at Bareneed.

"Hibb's Hole"

Just up from Hibb's Cove this is where road access ends on the Peninsula. Not the end of the Peninsula however. Feb. 1st. 2008

"Ship Cove Pond, Inland Fisherman"

You don't have to go very far on the Peninsula of Port de Grave to be inland but after my paddle to the end of it I decided to drive to the end and finish my visit. I was glad I did. Very rich culture here. I saw this Fisherman walking on the ice of Ship Cove Pond, which is at road level. When he stopped he put a line in the ice and began to tug oblivious to me the whole time.
