"To Top It Off..."

 Tony and I paddled in some nasty conditions this summer and fall. Mostly just to see how we would perform , how our boats would perform and how our developed skills would work and just simply to try and foster new ones. Sometimes waves were insignificant and other times well they put you well above the horizon or in this case the shoreline. It is kind of a weird feeling when you are on a wave and get a feeling that you may be going backwards for a second or so when you should be going forward like maybe when you are at a 15-20 degree angle perpendicular. At least that what it felt like on this wave at one of our fav play spots.

"Newfoundland and Labrador"

 



I saw this on the way up Signal Hill today. Fresh Snow and Sunshine made these black statues of a Labrador Retriever and Newfoundland dog contrast nicely. Would have been a good few hours of sunshine for the water but I just got off work and decided on fastfood and dining at the top of Signal Hill for the view. There were low lying clouds raining off in St. John's Bay with the sun pouring down everywhere else. Also looked like huge swell out there. A beautiful day on the Island.

"Bay Fog"

 Fog in St.John's Bay Wednesday June 18th, 2008 on one of the first sunny days we've had in a while. It was very mystical watching this move about the land and the sea.

"Roll'in Fog"

 It was a beautiful day in St. John's today. I was showing a visiting Nuclear Medicine Instructor around the city and on our visit to Signal Hill this most amazing fog transformation was taking place. Ya just never know in St.John's what element mother nature has in store to put on display for you. The tourist were very nicely treated to an ever changing phenomena.

"Straggler To Navigation"

The Icebergs are still floating by St. John's and there are sweet spots like Tors Cove for viewing them close up in their still huge forms. This morning shot coincided with a 25 foot fishing boat plying the waters of St. John's Bay on its' way to the fishing grounds no doubt, you can barely see the boat but you know it is there by the "V" shaped wake emanating from behind it. The Iceberg was stealthily maintaining it's course as well for places only known to it, or unknown as the tides and currents may decide its true course. A beautiful sight to behold in the forces of nature as the ominous skies darkened the waters of the still bay.

"Signal Hill Trail"

 

I was walking this trail this past Autumn and just wanted to close out my posting on a bit warmer feel tonight. The colors of the foilage on this massive rock if you've ever been or perhaps may be one day are spectacular in the fall. The trail meanders all the way along the coast and offers excellent photo opportunites throughout most of its course.

You can't help but wonder when you stand on Signal Hill in NFLD, "looking across the pond", some say, if any in Ireland are looking to us at the same time. Looking back to see if you are looking back at me. At anyrate it was freezing cold when I took it but the sun did peek through momentarily.

Unto winter we will soon be delivered and shades of yester-autumn are soon past. The mariad of colors soon douced in blankets of white and scents of decay smothered for spring.

"Hang Mans Hill"

If I was being hung this morning on this hill this is what I may have saw looking over Signal Hill towards Cape Spear. Gibbetts Hill or Hang Man's Hill was in use during the 1750's for hanging criminals of the day. They would tar and shackle them and leave their carcus to rot for weeks. In the hope of discouraging others from breaking the law. A practise discontinued in the 1800's. Apparantly only two such persons met their fate in this manner and it is said that they were rolled down the hill, when finally let down from their gallows, to the pond that sits below. The gulls in the distance reminded me of Vultures lurking for their share. October 28th, 2007. Don't mess with Danny! .........Steve.

"Cloud Massive"

This huge front rolling in from the north brought with it some most unusal cloud cover.As seen from Signal Hill. Oct.24th,2007.

"St. John's Harbor"

From Signal Hill on Wednesday October 24th, 2007. It was a cool evening and there was very unique cloud formations rolling in at dusk especially on the other side.

I took this picture on Wednesday evening from Signal Hill. It was about 23 degrees. The sun was actually a crimson red. July 26th,2007. The clouds were so full!

So scenic is the entrance to St. John's harbour. It seems even winter can't quell the emotion you feel when you look upon it.

Moon Rise

It seems I was chasing the moon this night. Caught the reflection at least off signal hill at about 6:20pm Sunday night Nov.5th,2006. I headed out to Cape Spear as well and thought I'd get the Ligthouse and moon together but it was too high in the sky when I got there.
